USA: Internships & Professional Career Training via CIEE 

International Education - aanrader voor gediplomeerden gegradueerden / Bachelors

International Education is een vzw die uitwisselingen organiseert tussen België en de USA (hoofdzakelijk Westkust). Het programma werd in 1980 gestart door enkele leerkrachten van de Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen - Campus Geel en heeft sindsdien zo'n 1000 Belgische studenten naar de USA gestuurd voor een stage of vakantiejob.  
Het programma is alleen toegankelijk voor studenten en afgestudeerden van het hoger onderwijs.

These programs are designed for students and graduates who want to go to the USA to acquire professional work experience. They can start any time of the year and can last up to 18 months. For such stays (even unpaid), you need a special J-1 visa. You cannot obtain the necessary documentation (DS 2019) directly
from the USA-consulate yourself;  you can only get this documentation via an international organization,
that has been authorized by the US authorities. Therefore VZW International Education ASBL has a 
cooperation agreement with  COUNCIL EXCHANGES (CIEE), who is authorized by the US State Department 
to act as your legal sponsor. If you have already been to the USA on a J-1 internship visa, it is extremely difficult at the moment, to participate again on another J-1 internship or PCT-visa.

The administrative fee you will pay to participate,  includes pre-departure information and orientation, program materials, participant handbook and access to CIEE’s website  www.councilexchanges.org   
listing various internships. Back up support and emergency assistance from Council’s New York head office throughout your stay in the US is also provided. The fee also includes comprehensive health and accident insurance . Therefore the amount of the fee depends on the duration of your stay.

Cancellation fees are applicable  (between $ 100 and $ 200, depending on time of cancellation).
Deposits are not required. You will only pay when your complete application is sent in to head office.
You must secure a placement with a company yourself before we can process your application.

Visas are not obtainable in the  fields of medicine, au pair or child care, aviation, fast food businesses, teaching, employment on a ship navigating in international waters, or any positions offered by temporary work agencies.

INTERNSHIPS:  
You must be a full-time student of higher education at the time of application. 
Internships must be in the field of your studies.  
Administrative fee (2004):

PCT (PROFESSIONAL CAREER TRAINING) PROGRAM:
You must be min. 20 and max. 40 years old and be fluent in English. You must have professional skills developed by ONE of the following : degree of higher education OR  apprenticeship of at least 2 years. 
Your training must be related to the field and level of study or professional qualifications.

As it may take a while to obtain an international passport, 
make sure you apply with your local town hall in time.
